Malays’ biggest threat is drugs, not other races, says Saifuddin

PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the way forward was to ‘grow the economic pie’ and fight corruption, rather than pit one community against another.

HANG TUAH JAYA: The biggest threat facing the Malays is not other races but drug abuse within the community, says PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Saifuddin, who is also home minister, said while some continued to portray DAP as a threat to the Malays, the real threat facing the community was its youths getting caught up in drugs

“The Malays and Muslims are not under threat because of other races.

“The Malays are under threat because they are poor. They are under threat because they account for the largest share of drug users,” he said at the 2026 PKR national congress here.

He said government and National Anti-Drugs Agency data showed that Perlis, Kedah and Terengganu recorded 1,000 drug use cases per 100,000 people.

Saifuddin said those affected were generally aged 15 and above, with many having dropped out of school and lacking educational qualifications and employment.

“If this is not addressed and job opportunities are not provided for young people, they will get involved (in drugs).”

Saifuddin described identity politics as a zero-sum game, urging Malaysians to judge the government on its economic performance and achievements instead.

He said the way forward was to “grow the economic pie” and fight corruption, rather than pit one community against another.
