PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has invited historian Rajmohan Gandhi, the grandson of India’s freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi, to visit Malaysia next year.
In a Facebook post, Anwar said he spoke with Rajmohan, whom he described as a longtime friend, during a recent phone call.
“We recounted meeting at a conference on democracies in Asia, which Rajmohan organised in Mumbai in 2012, and exchanged views on strengthening Malaysia-India historical and civilisational ties through academic cooperation, intellectual exchanges and civilisational dialogue.
“I have invited him to visit Malaysia in the first quarter of next year to deliver lectures to academics, university students and community leaders on democracy, peace, harmony and values-based leadership,” he said.
Rajmohan, 90, is the son of Devdas Mohandas Gandhi, Mahatma’s youngest son.
Rajmohan is a historian and academic who has also dabbled in politics. He was briefly a member of the Rajya Sabha, the Indian Parliament’s upper house, from 1990 to 1992.
