PETALING JAYA: PKR’s Lee Chean Chung today confirmed that he was issued a letter of demand by Bestinet Sdn Bhd over remarks on the Foreign Workers Centralised Management System (FWCMS), which it developed.
In a Facebook post, the Petaling Jaya MP said: “I will defend my right, as an elected representative, to lawfully carry out my oversight responsibilities, raise questions, and speak on matters of public concern”.
He said his lawyers, Wong Shi Hui and Tan Yi Bin, would respond to the letter.
Bestinet operates the FWCMS which Malaysia uses to manage part of its recruitment, especially of workers from Bangladesh.
Ten PKR MPs previously opposed the proposed implementation of a new migrant worker recruitment system called Turap (the Universal Recruitment Advanced Platform), which Bestinet developed.
Apart from Lee, the others included then-Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli, then-Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as well as Subang MP Wong Chen.
The MPs said the introduction of another system like Turap would further extend the monopoly of a private company, adding that FWCMS had operated for years without a signed contract.
They also said that weaknesses in system controls allowed unauthorised users to approve employer applications, and that these critical systems should not be privatised through public-private partnership arrangements.
