PETALING JAYA: The political pact reached by Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional for the Negeri Sembilan polls may not be suitable for Pahang or other states, Umno Supreme Council member Sharkar Shamsudin said.
Sharkar, the Pahang assembly speaker, said each state had its own political dynamics, which must be taken into account before any form of cooperation was considered.
“What is happening in Negeri Sembilan is for Negeri Sembilan.
“The people of Negeri Sembilan know what approach works for them, and the same may not necessarily be applied in Pahang, Johor, Melaka or Selangor,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
Sharkar was asked whether the BN-PN alliance could be adopted elsewhere, including Pahang, which must hold its next state election by February 2028.
The former five-term assemblyman said the changing political landscape demands that all political parties be more open in their approach.
He said Umno could no longer view politics the way it did when the party controlled both the federal and several state governments.
“There are now 10 Malay parties, so voters have many choices. Umno is no longer the only option,” he said.
