PETALING JAYA: PAS has set its sights on becoming the opposition in Johor, with party president Abdul Hadi Awang confident the party can win all 11 seats it is contesting in the July 11 state election.
The Johor assembly comprises 56 seats, with a simple majority of 29 needed to form the state government.
“Our target is to become the opposition in Johor … and adviser to the state government,” Utusan Malaysia reported him as saying today.
“What is important is that Johor is governed by the Malays and Muslims.
“We do not want the state to be controlled by liberals or non-Muslims,” he said at Masjid Rusila in Marang, his parliamentary constituency.
Perikatan Nasional is expected to contest 33 seats in the Johor polls, with Bersatu contesting 16, the Malaysian Indian People’s Party five, and Pejuang one.
Before its dissolution, Barisan Nasional held 40 seats in the state assembly, while Pakatan Harapan held 12, PN three, and Muda one.
PAS only won one seat in Johor – Maharani – in the last state election in 2022.
