PETALING JAYA: Three men took about two minutes to rob a goldsmith shop and escaped with jewellery worth nearly RM1.7 million at Sky Avenue, Genting Highlands, this morning.

Acting Pahang police chief Azry Akmar Ayob said preliminary investigations found that the three men travelled to the mall together in one vehicle before the 11.40am incident.

“They are believed to have worn hats and masks and were armed with crowbars and axes during the robbery.

“They were seen leaving Genting Highlands immediately after the robbery,” he was quoted by Berita Harian as saying today.

Azry said police personnel from Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department (CID), the Pahang police headquarters and Bentong CID were searching for the suspects.

Police initiated a lockdown of Genting Highlands from noon until evening after the robbery, but CCTV footage showed the suspects had escaped in their vehicle before the lockdown was imposed.

Photographs and videos of the robbery’s aftermath went viral on social media earlier today. In one video, two men dressed in black can be seen running through the shopping centre carrying a large sack.

Threads user @j00raaaa said traffic had built up around Genting Highlands because of the lockdown, while user @faridaspar said police officers were carrying out inspections on vehicles leaving the resort.
