250 Melaka PKR members rally outside party congress, demand swift TH probe

HANG TUAH JAYA: Some 250 Melaka PKR members dressed in black marched outside the venue for the party’s national congress here today, urging Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to speed up investigations into Tabung Haji.

The group carried banners bearing the words “Defend Tabung Haji” and “Keadilan” and repeatedly chanted “Siasat” (probe) outside the Melaka International Trade Centre here.

One participant, who asked to be known only as Nasir, said those involved were PKR members from Melaka and that no party leaders were involved.

“We are asking the prime minister to speed up the investigation into Tabung Haji.

“We met him and he promised to investigate the matter thoroughly,” he told FMT.

Another participant, Ashiq, said the Tabung Haji issue was close to the hearts of the Malays and Muslims and must be properly investigated.

“Action must be taken because this is our parents’ money, and it is also money meant for my children’s haj pilgrimage.”

The royal commission of inquiry findings into Tabung Haji were declassified last month and recommended a major overhaul, including tighter oversight, forensic audits of selected investments and limits on political involvement in the institution.

Its findings also led to investigations by the police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, Inland Revenue Board as well as several high-profile arrests.
