PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin has urged the government to extend the special parliamentary sitting by at least two days to debate a royal commission of inquiry report on Tabung Haji.
He said several matters required further clarification, including the forensic audit of 14 investments which he claimed had resulted in losses amounting to billions of ringgit for TH.
Muhyiddin, who is also Bersatu president, said MPs should be given more time to participate in the debate and present “well-reasoned and substantive arguments” to improve TH’s management, governance and performance.
He said such improvements were crucial given TH’s role as the institution responsible for managing investments and pilgrimage affairs for Muslims in Malaysia.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the report of the royal commission would be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat at a special sitting on Aug 11.
The 252-page report was declassified and released on Wednesday, about four years after the commission completed it in July 2022.
It found serious weaknesses in the pilgrim fund’s governance, investment and financial management between 2014 and 2020, and recommended a major overhaul, including tighter oversight, forensic audits of selected investments, and limits on political involvement in the institution.
The report put forward 25 recommendations, of which TH said 75% had already been implemented.
