PETALING JAYA: The termination of service for the personnel who allegedly beat up 25-year-old commando Abdul Hamid Talib, leaving him with severe injuries, is under way, the army said today.
In a statement, the army said its internal investigation into the incident, which occurred in March, was complete.
“Appropriate action has been taken on the offenders according to the relevant provisions, and the service termination process is ongoing.
“The police investigation into the matter has also been completed and further action is subject to the legal process,” it said.
The army said it had sought to ensure that Hamid received the best medical treatment and the necessary welfare aid, with assistance also channelled to his family.
Hamid, the seventh of eight siblings, joined the army in July 2023 and became a full commando in 2024, serving with the 22nd Commando Regiment.
He was allegedly beaten during training at the Sri Iskandar army camp in Mersing, Johor, on March 11, leaving him severely injured. However, family members claimed they were only told he had “fallen”.
The army said he was taken to Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor Bahru before being transferred to Tuanku Mizan Armed Forces Hospital and then Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for further treatment and rehabilitation.
A medical report confirmed that Hamid had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury affecting several parts of his brain, and quadriplegia involving all four limbs.
The family previously urged Bukit Aman to form a special investigation team and classify the case as attempted murder.
Police arrested two army personnel on March 14 to assist in the investigation but there have been no updates since.
Two days ago, Hamid’s family members urged the authorities for an update on the progress of the investigation, saying they had yet to receive clear answers about what happened to the commando.
