PETALING JAYA: Campaigning for the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election has brought greater revenue for hotels in the state, though hawkers are not seeing a similar boom in business.
The chairman of the Malaysian Budget Hotel Association’s Negeri Sembilan chapter, A Suresh, said the election season has brought a significant uptick in business for the industry, China Press reported.
“Hotels have received significantly more bookings during the campaign period, with many visitors from outside the state coming to Negeri Sembilan.
“Over the past two weeks, revenue has increased by between 80% and 90% compared with the normal season,” he said.
Suresh said business among the 60 hotels registered with MyBHA had previously been slow, “but everything has been booming during the campaign period”.
Kevin Lee, 41, who manages a hawker centre in Seremban, said the number of customers have remained steady since the campaigning started.
“I would not say sales have surged because there are many other hawker centres in town,” he said.
Norzati Isa, 55, from Paroi, said business at her mee udang stall has remained slow for the past week.
“Paroi is a large area, but not many VIPs come here,” she said. “It would be good if they also visit some of the less popular areas because there are many businesses there as well.”
