WASHINGTON: Protests erupted in Madison, the main city of the US state of Wisconsin, after a police officer fatally shot a knife-wielding man who the force said resisted arrest, Sputnik/RIA Novosti reported, citing CNN on Thursday.
The man was shot and killed in a struggle with police officers after he pulled out a knife and injured an officer, Madison police chief John Patterson was cited as saying by CNN.
The confrontation, which is being investigated by the state, sparked an outcry from the public on Wednesday.
The incident was reportedly captured on video by a bystander. It shows officers lifting the man from the ground and apparently using a taser on him, causing the man to fall again. Another officer is seen kicking him, while a third pins him to the ground with his knee.
A fourth officer then fires at the man at close range. A total of three shots can be heard in the video, the channel reported. The man was taken to the hospital, where he later died.
Patterson said none of the four officers were wearing body cameras at the time of the arrest. They have been placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
