PETALING JAYA: Johor Barisan Nasional chairman Onn Hafiz Ghazi has been sworn in for a second term as menteri besar at Istana Bukit Serene in Johor Bahru, this afternoon.

Onn Hafiz took his oath of office before Johor regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, according to The Royal Johor.

Onn Hafiz’s swearing-in follows BN’s landslide victory in the 16th Johor state election yesterday, where the Umno-led coalition won 48 of the 56 seats in the state assembly.

Earlier this afternoon, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim granted Onn Hafiz and BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi an audience at Istana Pasir Pelangi.

Onn Hafiz was first appointed menteri besar in March 2022 after BN won 40 seats in the state election that year.

His appointment came as a surprise as his predecessor, Hasni Mohammad, was widely expected to be appointed to a second term.

Onn Hafiz is now serving his third term as an assemblyman. He was first elected to represent Layang-Layang in 2018 with a 404-vote majority before moving to Machap in 2022, where he won by 6,543 votes.

He successfully defended his Machap seat yesterday, more than doubling his vote majority to 15,345.
