PETALING JAYA: A 19-year-old was slapped with a RM3,500 fine by the Ayer Keroh magistrates’ court for recording a video of his neighbour while she was showering.

Syafiq Hidayat Syukur pleaded guilty to an amended charge before magistrate Nur Afiqah Radhiah Zainurin, who ordered him to serve six months in prison if he failed to pay the fine, Sinar Harian reported.

Syafiq was charged with outraging the modesty of the victim, also 19, by recording a video of her with his phone while she was showering.

The offence was committed at Batu 4, Batu Berendam, at around 5pm on Sept 8 last year.

The charge was framed under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to five years in prison, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Syafiq, who was unrepresented, pleaded with the court to only impose a RM300 fine, saying he had to look after his siblings as their parents were divorced.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Nur Alia Safri however urged the court to impose a heavy sentence, saying his actions had outraged the victim’s modesty.
