PETALING JAYA: The trailer lorry driver involved in the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway crash that killed four members of a family has been released on police bail after the expiry of his four-day remand yesterday.
Pahang police chief Yahaya Othman said the 40-year-old driver was remanded after testing positive for methamphetamine.
The case is being investigated under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for driving under the influence, causing death or injury, and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug use.
“We are awaiting laboratory confirmation before referring the investigation papers to the deputy public prosecutor,” Yahaya was reported as saying today by Sinar Harian.
The crash claimed the lives of four family members from Felda Mempaga 1: driver A Halim Hasoon, 55, his wife Rozita Buang, 58, their daughter Norbahyah, 26, and granddaughter Nayla Afya Aizat Faizal, one.
In the 4.25pm accident on Sunday, the lorry driver was believed to have lost control while negotiating a bend on a hilly stretch of road, causing his vehicle to skid and crush the victims’ car.
All four victims were pronounced dead at the scene. Firefighters were reported to have taken two hours to extricate the bodies.
Yahaya said the lorry driver was also found to have 15 outstanding traffic summonses.
