PETALING JAYA: Police yesterday arrested a 46-year-old woman suspected of confining her nine-year-old adopted daughter in a storeroom behind a house in Taman Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban.

Seremban police chief Yatim Osman said the victim, who was adopted by the woman’s family seven years ago, was frequently scolded and beaten by the woman.

“During the recent school holidays, the victim was left in a storeroom behind the house and given food twice a day.

“She was only allowed into the house to use the toilet and was instructed to return to the storeroom afterwards,” he said in a Bernama report.

He said police were informed about the matter after receiving a report last night about a young girl who was allegedly locked in a storeroom.

Yatim said the victim was rescued and taken to Tuanku Ja’afar Seremban Hospital for further treatment.

The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for the neglect or exposure of a child in a manner likely to cause physical or emotional injury, which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction.
