Chinese national claims trial to murdering colleague at Cheras restaurant

Former waitress Yang Yahong claimed trial at the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.

KUALA LUMPUR: A Chinese national pleaded not guilty at the High Court here today to a charge of murdering a female colleague in 2024.

Former waitress Yang Yahong, 36, is charged with murdering cashier Zhang Wei, 34, at a restaurant in a shopping mall in Cheras on Nov 29, 2024.

The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty, or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years and no fewer than 12 strokes of the rotan.

Justice Aslam Zainuddin fixed July 16 for case management. He also asked Yang whether she required court-appointed counsel, to which she agreed.

Deputy public prosecutor Faridah Nurdinie Bahrum appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Michelle Tan held a watching brief for Zhang’s family.

In February, Yang pleaded not guilty in the sessions court to carrying two knives in a public place without valid reason.

The charge was framed under Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act, which carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment and whipping.
