PETALING JAYA: Eight people pleaded not guilty in the magistrates’ court in George Town today to a joint charge of causing hurt to three policemen on duty in a brawl at the Projek Perumahan Rakyat flats at Jalan Sungai, Sungai Pinang, last week.

The accused are Noor Nizar Shah Zainol Abidin, 37; Syafiq Nordin, 28; Azwandy Azmi, 38; Aiqal Zulkifrey, 28; Firdaus Abdul Malik, 34; Razin Abdul Muthalib, 34; Syazwan Omar, 30; and Low Jia Hui, 26, reported Utusan Malaysia.

They were charged with voluntarily causing hurt to S Uvaneand, 26, and Amzaruddin Fakhri Khuiruddin, 30, who are lance corporals, and Danial Danish Azlan, 23, a constable, as they were carrying out their duties in front of the flats at about 9.50pm on March 25.

The charge, framed under Section 332 of the Penal Code and read with Section 34 of the same Act, is punishable by up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Marissa Safina Saiful Adli offered bail of RM10,000 with one surety for each accused, but defence lawyer S Meharaj, who represented all eight accused, appealed for a lower amount, saying his clients were ordinary workers with family dependants.

Magistrate Tunku Intan Nadiah Tunku Mohammed Nazarin allowed bail of RM5,000 with one surety each and set May 19 for mention.
