PETALING JAYA: The understanding between Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional helped transform eight seats that BN narrowly won in the August 2023 Negeri Sembilan state election into comfortable victories.
An analysis of the latest results showed BN’s combined majority in Sungai Lui, Palong, Jeram Padang, Lenggeng, Juasseh, Seri Menanti, Senaling and Kota jumped more than 15-fold, from 3,722 votes in 2023 to 55,908 votes this time.
The biggest swing was recorded in Palong, where Mustapha Nagoor won with a 13,702-vote majority, compared with only 564 votes in the previous election.
Mustapha secured 15,197 votes, well ahead of Pakatan Harapan candidate Zahin Zinal Abidin with 1,495 votes and Bersatu candidate Rebin Birham with 590 votes.
In Lenggeng, Asna Amin’s majority increased from 685 votes to 9,994 votes, while Suhaimi Aini in Kota recorded a 7,693-vote majority compared with just 135 votes in 2023.
Razi Ali also strengthened BN’s hold on Sungai Lui, winning by 8,466 votes compared with his previous 535-vote majority.
BN’s majority in Juasseh rose from just 78 votes to 4,091 votes, while Seri Menanti saw its margin increase from 370 votes to 4,323 votes.
In Jeram Padang, Zaidy Abdul Kadir’s majority grew from 693 votes to 4,482 votes, while Qayyum Abd Jalil retained Senaling with a 3,157-vote majority, up from BN’s 662-vote margin in 2023.
In all eight seats, PN did not field candidates against BN, allowing supporters of both coalitions to consolidate behind BN candidates.
The Negeri Sembilan state election saw BN win 18 seats, PH 11 and PN seven.
BN and PN have agreed to form the new Negeri Sembilan state government led by Umno’s Ismail Lasim as the new menteri besar.
