PETALING JAYA: A part-time event planner previously charged with driving under the influence of alcohol will now face an amended charge after the motorcyclist he knocked into died two months ago.
Klang Selatan police chief Lim Jit Huey said the investigation paper was resubmitted to the Selangor deputy public prosecutor’s office after Zulfiqar Zamir Amirul Nizam, 27, died on May 26.
“The prosecution has ordered for the case to be reclassified, with the accused to be charged again in the Klang magistrates’ court at 9am tomorrow,” he said in a brief statement.
On May 18, Low Kean Peng, 35, claimed trial to causing grievous injury to Zulfiqar while driving under the influence of alcohol at Persiaran Kota in Klang at 12.35am on May 13.
The previous charge under Section 44(1A) of the Road Transport Act 1987 carries a seven to 10 years’ jail term and a fine between RM30,000 and RM50,000, if found guilty.
Zulfiqar died a week later after 13 days in intensive care at Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang.
Following his death, his family urged the authorities to investigate Low for murder instead.
