PETALING JAYA: A mechanic was charged in the Tawau magistrates’ court today with trafficking nearly 75kg of methamphetamine at a car park last week.
Sopian Mustafa, 40, was charged with trafficking 74,866g of methamphetamine at about 10.30pm on July 12. The drugs are estimated to be worth millions of ringgit, reported Berita Harian.
The Indonesian national was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. If convicted, he faces the death penalty or life imprisonment, and must be caned at least 12 strokes if he is not sentenced to death.
Sopian nodded after the charge was read before magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum, but no plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Intan Jamrin prosecuted the case while Sopian was represented by lawyer Prem Elmer. The court denied bail and set Aug 20 for case mention.
Sopian was arrested after police found a large quantity of drugs during a search of a grey Proton Saga parked along Jalan Tun Hamdan in Tawau.
Police uncovered three golf bags, two branded bags, RM12,674 in cash and an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
A total of 70 plastic packets containing clear crystalline chunks believed to be methamphetamine were found in the bags.
