PETALING JAYA: The government will table a motion to refer the Freedom of Information bill to a parliamentary select committee for detailed examination, says law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said.
She said the bill, which had its first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today, would be discussed during engagement sessions with stakeholders and MPs from both sides of the divide.
“This is in line with the government’s approach to major and complex institutional reforms, which seeks to establish a comprehensive and balanced legal framework rather than simply pass a single law,” she said in a statement today.
Azalina said the government had already taken note of concerns raised by civil society organisations about various aspects of the bill.
“This reflects our shared commitment to ensuring that the bill truly fulfils our reform goals and complies with best practices,” she said.
The bill is scheduled for its second and third readings during the current Dewan Rakyat meeting.
