MUAR: Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Maharani candidate Taqiuddin Cheman has rejected claims that some allies in Amanah are boycotting his campaign for the July 11 election in Johor.
Taqiuddin, of Amanah, expressed confidence that there would be no mass boycott by PH component members and supporters, particularly among members of his own party in Maharani.
“I don’t think there are members who want to boycott my campaign. Maybe one or two individuals, but it won’t become a big movement and affect our campaign,” he told FMT.
The former Pulai Sebatang assemblyman maintained that support from PH’s machinery throughout the campaign has been strong.
Taqiuddin, the state Amanah Youth chief, also dismissed claims that he was a parachute candidate, saying he had long been active in Muar and his family also resides in the area.
“I have been active here since my youth. I was also the former Muar PAS Youth chief in 2015 and I am now the Muar Amanah division’s vice-chief.”
Taqiuddin was responding to rumours that some Amanah supporters were refusing to back him due to dissatisfaction over his candidacy for the seat.
The Maharani seat will see a four-cornered fight between Taqiuddin, Anuar Hayan (Perikatan Nasional), Ashari Sarip (Barisan Nasional), and Amir Jack (Muda).
In the 2022 Johor polls, the seat was won by PN’s Abdul Aziz Talib with a majority of 1,037 votes in a six-cornered contest.
