PETALING JAYA: Six men have been arrested in connection with a parang attack at a Chinese temple in Jelutong, Penang, on Sunday that left two men seriously injured.
Penang police chief Dennis Lim said the suspects, aged between 26 and 38, were arrested on the same day in the northeast district of the island.
“The attack, which occurred at about 4.30am on June 21, is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding between one of the victims and the suspects at another location prior to the incident,” he said in a statement today.
Police also seized several items believed to be linked to the case, including a parang, clothing thought to have been worn during the incident, six mobile phones, two motorcycles, a Nissan Almera, and a helmet.
Checks found that some of the suspects had criminal and drug-related records, although urine tests on all six returned negative for drugs.
The George Town magistrates’ court granted a seven-day remand order from June 22 to 28 for all six suspects to assist in investigations.
The case is being investigated under Sections 326 and 120B of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons and criminal conspiracy.
If convicted, offenders face up to 20 years’ imprisonment and may also be liable to a fine or whipping.
Police have also identified two other suspects believed to be involved in the attack who remain at large.
