PETALING JAYA: Police are hunting five men suspected of stealing Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) cables in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), Kuala Lumpur, yesterday.
Brickfields police chief Hoo Chang Hook said the incident occurred around 4.30am on Jalan Dato Sulaiman and came to light after a video of it went viral on social media.
“A witness conducting topographic work spotted five unidentified men in a BMW pulling TM cables from a utility manhole.
“The witness confronted the group, who then fled the scene in three BMW cars: two white and one black,” he said in a statement.
Police said a review of CCTV footage from the area confirmed the involvement of five male suspects and the use of three vehicles. Efforts to identify and locate the suspects are ongoing.
According to Hoo, TM assisted investigators and estimated the losses from the theft at about RM20,000.
The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft and Section 235 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for unauthorised tampering with network facilities.
