Bangi PAS Youth approves motion to cut ties with Bersatu

Bangi PAS Youth said it also condemned a statement by Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali allegedly directed at the PAS president.

PETALING JAYA: Bangi PAS Youth approved a motion to sever political ties with Bersatu during an annual general meeting today.

In a brief statement on Facebook, the PAS Youth chapter also called for the party’s central leadership and the national PAS Youth to make the same decision.

“Bangi PAS Youth also unanimously condemned the statement made by Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali towards the PAS president during the Bersatu election machinery launch in Melaka (last week),” it said.

While the PAS Youth chapter did not elaborate on Azmin’s comments, it was believed to refer to his remarks, which pushed back against claims that Bersatu lacked grassroots machinery and urged critics to “open their eyes and ears”.

On May 22, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang claimed that Bersatu had demanded many seats in previous state elections and by-elections, despite having insufficient machinery on the ground.

According to Hadi, PAS had often been forced to deploy its own machinery to support coalition efforts in the various polls.

Bangi PAS Youth’s decision comes as ties between the Islamic party and Bersatu worsened following the Perlis political crisis, which saw a Bersatu assemblyman succeed an elected representative from PAS as the menteri besar.

Hadi has since said that PAS is reassessing its ties with Bersatu in Perikatan Nasional, including the possibility of contesting the next general election without the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party.
